Abstract

The analysis of forest residues from three types of trees (pine, oak and oyamel) as an alternative energy source is presented. Fragmented and shredded wood residues, typically resulting from forestry activities, are considered. The availability of these residues in Mexico, particularly in a forested region of Puebla, is analyzed. In Mexico, oak is considered the second most important timber resource after pine. The main components of biomass are analyzed through experimental tests and pressure and temperature values are determined for steam generation by biomass combustion. The analysis is performed on practically unprocessed biomass to limit the amount of energy applied in the preprocessing. The results show that the analyzed forest residues are viable for steam generation, which allows them to be considered for power generation systems
